In cases of sudden
illness or injury to a student or staff member, first aid shall ordinarily be
given by school staff who hold a first-aid card. Further medical attention to students is the parents’
responsibility, or of someone the parents designate in case of emergency.
Each principal is charged with providing for
the immediate care of ill or injured persons within his or her area of
responsibility.
Staff members shall report self-administered
first-aid treatment to an immediate supervisor.
In each school, procedures for handling
health emergencies shall be established and made known to the staff. Each school and school vehicle shall be
equipped with appropriate first-aid supplies and equipment. All employees are expected to know where
first-aid supplies and equipment are kept in their work areas.
Designated employees in each building shall
hold current first-aid cards. In
compliance with Oregon Administrative Rules, each school shall have, at a
minimum, at least one (1) staff member with a current first-aid card for every
60 students enrolled or an emergency response team per building. Each team shall consist of no fewer than six
(6) persons who hold current first-aid and CPR cards and who are trained
annually in the district and building emergency plans. Names of the designated employees shall be
made known to staff and students.

** As used
in this policy, the term parent includes legal guardian or person in a parental
relationship. The status and duties of
a legal guardian are defined in ORS 125.005 (4) and 125.300 ‑
125.325. The determination of whether
an individual is acting in a parental relationship, for purposes of determining
residency, depends on the evaluation of the factors listed in ORS
419B.373. The determination for other
purposes depends on evaluation of those factors and a power of attorney
executed pursuant to ORS 109.056.
